Away in a Manger lyrics

Orla Fallon

Away in a manger, no crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes
But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.
I love Thee Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my side until morning is nigh.

[Instrumental]

Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me for ever and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children, in Thy tender care,
And fit us for heaven to live with Ye there.

The authorship of the lyrics for "Away In A Manger" is unconfirmed and often disputed. Some early attributions mistakenly credited Martin Luther, the German Reformation leader, as the author, but this is generally dismissed by scholars today.

The song is often sung to one of two melodies:
  1. "Cradle Song" composed by William J. Kirkpatrick in 1895. This version is particularly popular in England and in English-speaking regions outside North America.
  2. "Mueller" composed by James R. Murray in 1887. This version is more common in North America.
