Hand Me Down My Bible lyrics
The Dubliners ft. Luke KellyOh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now hand me down my Bible
I like my liquor and my livin' hard,
May the Lord save my soul.
My salvation was a turn of the card
My heart's as black as coal.
But everybody's got the right to go wrong
Everybody's got to sing my song
Everybody's got the right to go wrong
Sing my song, sing my song.
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now hand me down my Bible
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now hand me down my Bible
I don't give a damn for any man,
As all the world can see,
The time has come to make a stand
Won't you shine your light on me.
Come on people, let the world begin,
Come on now let the sun shine in,
Come on people let the world begin
Let it in, let it in.
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now hand me down my Bible
[Instrumental]
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Hand me down my Bible
Oh Oh Glorio,
Now I'm the Lord's disciple
Oh Oh Glorio,
Hand me down my Bible...
Song Details
Composer Phil Coulter
Lyricist: Bill Martin
Brief: When introducing the song, Luke Kelly said that the first part of the song was sung by any man, a sinner like we all are, and the second part was sung by Dr Ian Paisley - leader of the screw Ireland at any cost party! Paisley was also a Reverend and renowned for his incitement, provocation and undesirable sentiment towards Catholics.
The following is an excerpt referring to the song taken from the website Songs and Stories. The author talks about Luke's entertaining introduction to the song along with his views on Ian Paisly and then goes on to say:We are all brothers, it is past time to let it go. 800 years of hurt, subjugation and hate – it is past time to let it go. We can do so much more together than we can apart...songsandstories.net
