Lyrics: Joseph Mohr (1816) - Austrian Roman Catholic priest and writer.
The song was first performed on Christmas Eve in 1818 at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria.
The hymn celebrates the anticipation of the arrival of the newborn saviour.
